Increasing Turbine Performance and Output Through
Various
Turbine Cooling Technologies
With increased fuel
(natural gas costs), it is imperative
that gas turbines operate more efficiently – and gas turbines
operate at higher efficiencies when the inlet air is cooler.
When cooler air is provided to the turbine, additional power is
generated by the turbine.
Turbine Inlet Air
Cooling, Inlet Fogging and Humid Air Injection systems are becoming
increasingly popular choices that help increase a combustion turbines (CT)
performance and output.
First of all, it is important to note that as the temperature of the
ambient air temperature surrounding the gas turbine decreases, more
specifically;
-
The
density of the air (or the total amount and number of air molecules)
increases as the temperature decreases.
This results in a greater amount of air which then flows
through the turbine – and this results in greater efficiency –
which in turn, means more power is produced.
-
Since
the compression of the air inside the turbine is more efficient at
lower temperatures, the turbine’s horsepower requirements to
compress the air is decreased.
It
should also be noted that any given manufacturer’s specific ratings of
the gas turbines are based at ISO conditions.
These ISO conditions are the same regardless of combustion
turbine manufacturer and the outputs for all CT’s are based on these
conditions:
-
59
degrees F
-
60%
relative humidity
-
Elevation:
Sea-level
Any increases
in one of the above decreases
the performance and output of combustion ALL combustion turbines,
regardless of manufacturer, and irrespective of the manufacture’s
ratings for each specific CT. This
is especially critical in summer months, when power is needed the most.
The CT’s in simple cycle and combined cycle power plants
(without turbine inlet air cooling, inlet fogging or humid air
injection) output can be as much as 25% - 30% LESS than the
manufacturer’s ratings – which again, are at ISO conditions.
Since there are more and more combustion turbines located in hot
regions of the country turbine inlet air cooling and inlet fogging, are
becoming more popular choices to enhance gas turbine performance and
output.
Our company provides turn-key systems that increase the performance of
your gas turbines, which provide optimum turbine output, that in turn,
increases our client’s profits. We
can provide the feasibility and engineering analysis and proposal in as
little as 6-8 weeks, with a turn-key installation completed in as little
as 6-8 months.
By
the term “turn-key” we provide as much of a turn-key solution our
customers require, this includes one or more of the following;
Scope
of Services
Meeting with our
customer, we mutually determine their concerns and goals for each
facility. Then, in concert with our customer, we mutually develop a
specific Scope of Services that delineate our specific requirements as it
applies to each of our customer’s facility (facilities).
Site
Inspection & Review
We inspect and
review our client’s facility and obtain information regarding the past
and present performance of the gas turbines, along with all ancillary
equipment (Heat Recovery
Steam Generators, Waste Heat Boilers,
Selective Catalytic Reduction, Controls, etc.)
Client
Proposal
-
Based
on the site inspection and review, we will then analyze the
information and then present our client with a proposal that addresses
the client’s concerns and goals, along with facility-specific
improvements that will help our client achive their goals.
-
Preliminary
feasibility, engineering and design study that identifies the best,
optimum turbine cooling solution for each of our customer’s
particular requirements, equipment and location.
-
Equipment
selection – we are vendor neutral and do NOT have any preferences
for one manufacturer. Our
goal is simply to provide the best, optimum solution, with the best
equipment, that best fits our clients specific goals.
Project
Management
Our turn-key solution
includes the installation and interface with manufacturers and
incorporates any/all performance (and schedule) guarantees.
Performance
Guarantees
Our turnkey solution and
proposal can also incorporate a performance guarantee/contract which
guarantees the increased output of each facility after our installation of
the new equipment.
Project
Financing
Depending on the client
and their financial information, we can arrange for up to 100% financing
of our recommended equipment solution(s).
